Champions League Final with FC Barcelona vs Manchester United

UEFA's showpiece Final reaches Wembley Stadium on Saturday 28 May. Kick-off is at 7.45pm UK/Local time, 20:45CET (Spanish/European Time), 2.45pm EST, 2.45am CN.Often renowned as the biggest game in club football in the world, the cream of European will descend on north London in May to battle it out for the crown of European Champions. We now know the two teams who will contest the UEFA Champions League Final, in a return of the 2009 Final FC Barcelona will face Manchester United.Having previously lost their two past semi-final meetings with Real Madrid, Pep Guardiola's side emerged 3-1 winners on aggregate on Tuesday evening and they were joined at Wembley, which carries historical significance for both clubs, by Manchester United. 2-0 winners in the Veltins Arena, United emphatically sealed their place with a 4-1 win at Old Trafford on Wednesday as Antonio Valencia, Darron Gibson and a brace from Anderson set them on their way to Wembley. Both will feel it is in their destiny to be the first winners of the UEFA Champions League at the new Wembley. Indeed both sides won the competition for the very first time at the English national stadium. Sir Matt Busby led his team to a triumph over Benfica and Eusebio in London in 1968, while Barcelona ended a lengthy wait for a first victory in 1992 as Johann Cruyff took his team, containing current Barca boss Josep Guardiola in midfield, to glory against Sampdoria. Having recovered from the Munich Air Disaster ten years earlier, it was an emotional triumph for Busby, Bobby Charlton and the United fans at Wembley as they were crowned European Champions in 1968. Charlton scored two of the four goals, George Best and birthday boy Brian Kidd got the other two.Barcelona also required extra-time to win the trophy, with Ronald Koeman getting the crucial goal that saw them over the line. The first European Cup Final at Wembley saw AC Milan beat Benfica 2-1 in 1963, and of the five finals in the capital there have been two English winners. Liverpool lifted the European Cup in 1978 when they defeated Club Brugge by a solitary Kenny Dalglish goal. Johann Cruyff was also involved in the other Wembley Final, as he played in the Ajax team that won their first of three successive European Cups in 1971. Dick Van Dijk and Arie Haan got the goals in a win over Panathinaikos.Manchester United meet Barcelona in a reprisal of the 2009 Final in Rome when goals from Samuel Eto'o and Lionel Messi were enough to see the trophy returning to Catalonia for a third time, the same number of times it has resided in Manchester. But who will take the crown for a fourth time?

The UEFA Champions League Semi Final:FC Schalke 04 vs. Manchester United

                                                               Live Here

It will be four exciting games and we start with the first one. FC Schalke 04 is quite a surprise with their semi final spot. They're unbeaten this season in CL home games and they've proven with a 2-5 away win at Inter Milan that they can beat big teams in away games. Manchester United had a quite easy Group Stage and reached the semis with beating Chelsea. They've got a good team and are definately the favourites in this semi final. Expect two great games and attacking football from both sides.

                                                                Live Here

A different story is the other semi final. As Real Madrid and FC Barcelona will meet eachother again. The arch rivals will have to prepare for a fourth and fifth El Clásico. Definately two heated games coming up, with passion, nasty tackles and hopefully also good football. They've already played three times against eachother this season. Barca won their home game in the league with 5-0 and Real's home game in the league ended in a 1-1 draw. Last week Real took the Copa del Rey, the Spanish Cup. In the league it looks like Barca will get the title, so these two games in the CL are for both very important to make a chance on that most important other title: the Champions League. As written before in 18 days they play four times against eachother. Two matches are done, and Real got the better moral after a draw in the league and the Cup win.

                                                            Live Here

Barca is the team with the most possession in almost every game, but can they also get some goals out of that? We will know that in this semi final. As they know all ins and outs of eachother it might become more tactical and defensive games rather then exciting games with good football. The last two games have shown that a bit, with Mourinho going for defensive tactics and countering as in his Inter Milan time. On the other hand Guardiola still trusted in their possession football and an attacking style of play. But we all know the outcome of these last two games and that might make Guardiola change his tactics? But lets hope they proof different and show us two attracting fair games, as they both got the class and top players to do so.

Manchester United more complete since Ronaldo exit

Manchester United have become a more complete team since the departure of Portuguese forward Cristiano Ronaldo at the end of the 2008/09 season.Ronaldo moved on to Real Madrid for a world record fee following Barca's 2-0 win over United in the 2009 Champions League final in Rome and the Catalan club face the English Premier League champions again in Saturday's final in London."This Manchester team is much more unpredictable without Cristiano Ronaldo," Alves told reporters at a media open day at Barca's Nou Camp stadium."You can see now that they have built a much more balanced side, stronger than a couple of years ago," added the Brazilian, who missed the 2009 final through suspension. "They are dangerous across the board and packed with great players."Barca and United are both seeking a fourth European Cup at Wembley stadium on Saturday, which would put them level with Ajax Amsterdam and Bayern Munich and behind only Liverpool,AC Milan and Real Madrid.Playmaker Xavi, whose control of possession and distribution is a key element of Barca's strategy, said United were not as direct in attack as they used to be with Ronaldo in the side and preferred to keep the ball and build through the midfield."I don't know whether it's because of Cristiano Ronaldo but it's true that Manchester is a team that works as a unit, very solid on the pitch," he told reporters."This team likes to have the ball more and is not as direct as it used to be."Xavi's team mate David Villa, who began his first season at Barca on fine form but has found goals hard to come by in recent months, said Ronaldo's departure had liberated United."Right now, sincerely, I believe that in the final you will see the two best teams in Europe," he said."They have grown as a side since 2009," added midfielder Andres Iniesta."They have made a very good impression in the Premier League, dominating and proving that they have the desire to remain among the best and fight for the Champions League," he said."The team is very complete and I don't think that the adjustments of the past two seasons have changed much. They are stronger because they know each other better."

Barca beat Malaga & Ronaldo leads rout of Almeria

Cristiano Ronaldo set a new La Liga scoring record of 40 goals in a season and Emmanuel Adebayor grabbed a hat-trick as Real Madrid destroyed relegated Almeria 8-1 at the Bernabeu on Saturday.Newly-crowned champions Barcelona also wrapped up their campaign with a victory, coming back to win 3-1 in Malaga with most of their first team being rested ahead of next weekend's Champions League final against Manchester United.Barca, who secured their third consecutive league crown last week, finished with 96 points from 38 games, four ahead of second-placed Real Madrid, scorers of 102 league goals this term.Portuguese forward Ronaldo only needed four minutes to pass the previous league record of 38 goals, bundling in at the far post from a Sergio Ramos header. He also bagged the seventh in the 77th minute, running from deep and firing a long-range effort inside the far post.Adebayor, whose loan spell from Manchester City is expiring, signed off with three goals, Karim Benzema bagged two and youth team player Joselu notched one at the end.Malaga struck first at the Rosaleda through Sebastian Fernandez but Barca levelled with a disputed penalty just before the break, Bojan Krkic netting from the spot. The hosts had caused Barca plenty of problems in the first half but a long-range shot from Ibrahim Afellay and a header from youth team player Marc Bartra in the last 15 minutes sealed Barca's 30th win of the season.

Real Madrid Agree to Sign Hamit Altintop

Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho made the latest addition to his squad for next season on Thursday when the Spanish club agreed to sign German-born Turkey midfielder Hamit Altintop from Bayern Munich. The 28-year-old, whose deal with the Bundesliga club expires at the end of this term, had agreed a four year contract, Real said in a statement.Altintop is Mourinho's second signing since they lost out to champions Barcelona in the domestic league title race and the Champions League after fellow Turkey midfielder Nuri Sahin joined from Borussia Dortmund last week.Together with Sami Khedira, Mesut Ozil and Sahin, Altintop is the fourth German born midfielder to join the club since the Portuguese took the helm at the end of the 2009/10 campaign.Ozil, like Sahin and Altintop, is of Turkish descent, though he opted to play for Germany at international level alongside Khedira, who has a German mother and Tunisian father.Altintop declined to negotiate an extension with Bayern after failing to hold down a regular starting place this term, when he made 14 appearances and scored two goals. He joined the Munich-based club from Schalke 04 in 2007 and won a league and cup double in 2008 and 2010. He was a Champions League finalist last year when Bayern lost to Mourinho's Inter Milan at the Bernabeu. He has made 64 appearances for his country and helped Turkey reach the semi-finals at Euro 2008, where he was included in UEFA's team of the tournament.

Gladbach edge out Bochum

Belgium striker Igor de Camargo gave Borussia Moenchengladbach a 1-0 win at home to second-division VfL Bochum in Thursday's German league, first-leg play-off to put his side a step closer to safety.Bundesliga side 'Gladbach will take a slender advantage back to Bochum on Wednesday in the second-leg after de Camargo tapped home with the last kick of the game following a goal-mouth scramble in the 93rd minute.Although the fourth official had indicated there was two minutes of added time, there was controversy as two minutes 40 seconds of extra time was shown on the clock when 'Gladbach took the final throw-in that led to the goal.Referee Guenter Perl blew for the time immediately after the goal as the 'Gladbach players celebrated wildly, while Bochum were left fuming.Having finished third from bottom of the Bundesliga last season, 'Gladbach must beat Bochum, who finished third from top of the second division, to guarantee their place in the top tier next season. In the play-off, the away-goals rule used in European competition applies.

English Premier League club Chelsea will play in Malaysia

English Premier League club Chelsea will play in Malaysia on July 21, the event organiser said Thursday. The club will meet Malaysia XI at the 87,000-capacity Bukit Jalil Stadium in the capital Kuala Lumpur as part of its Asia Tour, John Merritt, the Singapore-based managing director for promoter ProEvents told.Liverpool, another Premier League club, has also said they will play in Malaysia in July, but no date has been announced yet, Merritt said. ‘So far we have only announced this one team (Chelsea),’ he said. ‘There will be more announcements over the coming weeks.’Ticket sales for the Chelsea match will begin Friday, with an online purchasing option up and running on May 30.The team will also stage open training sessions at the stadium, according to its website. Chelsea will play in Bangkok on July 24 and Hong Kong on July 27 and 30.

Charity match drawn 2-2

Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema were on target as Real Madrid and Seleccion de Murcia played out an entertaining 2-2 draw in a charity match on Wednesday evening. The game was arranged at the Nueva Condomina in an effort to raise support for the victims of the earthquake-hit town of Lorca and proved to be a lively affair in front of 32,000 spectators, reports goal.com.Benzema broke the deadlock two minutes into the second-half but Pepe equalized for the local side just five minutes later when he put the ball into his own goal.Murcia then took the lead on 64 minutes through Meca, but Ronaldo leveled the score just minutes after being sent through by Kaka."This kind of gesture during hard times can cheer people up and bring them hope," said Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso after the match. "We lend our support by playing football, which is the best way we know how."With this little bit of help and the vitality and enthusiasm of this city, they will overcome this. This was a nice, entertaining match and we all had fun playing."

Football Association to abstain from Fifa poll

The English Football Association (FA) will abstain from casting a ballot in the Fifa presidential election in a protest against both Sepp Blatter and Mohammad Bin Hammam. The FA board made the decision yesterday after new corruption claims were made last week at a British parliamentary inquiry against the Fifa executive committee and Qatar over the bidding process for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups."The FA board has today agreed to abstain in the vote for the presidency of FIifa," FA chairman David Bernstein said in a statement. "There are a well-reported range of issues both recent and current which, in the view of the FA board, make it difficult to support either candidate."Blatter was elected Fifa president in 1998 and is seeking a fourth four-year term. Having been re-elected unopposed in 2007, Blatter is facing his first challenger since he beat Eisa Hayatou in 2002.Blatter said shortly before the FA announced its decision.Fifa is currently investigating the validity of claims that executive committee members Hayatou and Jacques Anouma were paid to vote for Qatar, which was awarded the 2022 World Cup.David Triesman, the chairman of the FA until last May, also told lawmakers thatfourlong-standing Fifa executive committee members -Jack Warner, Nicolas Leoz, Ricardo Teixeira and Worawi Makudi  engaged in "improper and unethical" conduct in the 2018 bidding, which was won by Russia. The FA is still unhappy that England only received two votes in last December's vote for the 2018 World Cup. One FA board member, Roger Burden, was acting chairman at the time of the vote but withdrew his application to take the job on a full-time basis because he said he could no longer trust Fifa."The FA values its relationships with its international football partners extremely highly," said Bernstein, Burden's successor as FA chairman. "We are determined to play an active and influential role through our representation within both UEFA and Fifa. We will continue to work hard to bring about any changes we think would benefit all of international football."Blatter said he tried to persuade Bernstein to back him at a meeting at Wembley Stadium in April."He asked me what Fifa can do for England and I put it the other way, ‘What can England do for Fifa with their efficient Premier League?'" Blatter said in Zurich.

Prolific Falcao heads Porto to Europa glory

Porto deservedly beat Braga 1-0 to win the Europa League after a superb header by Colombian striker Falcao decided the first all-Portuguese final of a European competition Wednesday.Falcao swooped for his 17th goal of the competition just before halftime, timing his run to perfection to meet compatriot Fredy Guarin's precise cross and brilliantly direct a header past Braga keeper Artur.
Braga, the competition's surprise packages who knocked out former European champions Liverpool and Benfica, should have equalised when Mossoro went clean through seconds after halftime, only to shoot straight at the goalkeeper. However, they did not have enough attacking guile to stop Porto boss Andre Villas Boas emulating the club's greatest coach Jose Mourinho by winning this competition and the domestic league in his first season in charge. He also became the youngest coach to win a European trophy."Without a doubt this is a great feat. We have one trophy left for a memorable season," Villas Boas said."This has a huge emotional impact for us. Round after round, we kept believing more. Porto becomes an even more special club, even more unique. It adds another trophy, which is important and builds its future."Porto cruised to the Portuguese title undefeated and reached this final by knocking out the likes of Spain's Sevilla and Villarreal.Their opponents, playing in their first European final, created the first chance when midfielder Custodio fired a half volley wide of Porto captain Helton's goal on four minutes.Braga coach Domingos was almost certainly taking charge of his team for the last time with media speculation strongly linking him with a move to Sporting."I am very proud, I lived unique moments here. These players also did, it's a beautiful story," he said."May Braga continue to grow, we dignified Portuguese football."Porto had the better of the first half and burly Brazilian forward Hulk cut in from the wing and zig-zagged past two defenders before flashing the ball across the Braga goal.Hulk continued to prove a menace and was forcibly stopped in his tracks twice at the cost of two yellow cards in quick succession. But it was his strike partner Falcao who broke the deadlock a minute before the break, handing the game the jolt it needed with his 38th goal of the season and his team's 137th.The goal meant the prolific striker, who scored five goals in the semi-final against Villarreal, took his record-breaking tally for a single European competition further past the previous mark of 15 held by Juergen Klinsmann. It also succeeded in shaking the game into life and Braga would have been level had substitute Mossoro, who seized on some lax Porto defending with virtually his first touch, fired either side of Helton when put clear on goal.As the pace of the game picked up, so did the frequency of yellow cards with three more brandished, underlying the rivalry between two teams based a mere 50 kilometres apart.Braga kept searching for an equaliser but lacked any cutting edge in front of goal, a criticism throughout a gritty campaign in which they scored just three goals in four quarter-final and semi-final matches compared to Porto's 18.That was as close as Domingos Paciencia's stubborn side came, allowing their more illustrious opponents to add a second Europa title to a trophy room that also includes two European Cups, a European Supercup and two world club titles.Porto, who lifted the same trophy when the competition was known as the UEFA Cup in 2003, also remain on course for a quadruple haul of trophies this season.

Diego Maradona was thrilled to resume his coaching career

Diego Maradona said he was thrilled to resume his coaching career in the United Arab Emirates where he would have no restrictions in signing players for his new club Al Wasl. The Dubai-based club confirmed a deal with Maradona on Monday but gave no details. Before returning to Dubai Maradona will going home to Buenos Aires later this week."It's a marvellous experience that I went looking for. I didn't need any recommendation,"Maradona , who had been linked to several jobs since his contract as Argentina coach was not renewed after last year's World Cup, said on Wednesday."I'm happy because I saw the opportunity to be able to coach in a country which maybe doesn't have all the stars but a team to lead, good money,Who give you the players you ask for," he told TyC Sports by telephone from Spain.Maradona said his assistant coaches would be the same two men on his staff at the World Cup in South Africa where his Argentina team were knocked out by Germany in the quarter-finals, Hector Enrique and Alejandro Mancuso."There is a signed pre-contract which needs polishing and then we'll have to start thinking about the work," said the 50-year-old 1986 World Cup-winning captain.

Transfer rumours making rounds

Concerned by the paucity of tearful, preening, pouting, Portuguese goal-getters strutting around Eastlands, Manchester City will attempt to "smash the world transfer record" by bringing Cristiano Ronaldo back to England, according to an "exclusive" running in the Mirror. As a Real Madrid player, Ronaldo has scored 38 La Liga goals in 37 games so far this season, three more than Mario Balotelli, Edin Dzeko, Jo, Adam Johnson, David Silva and Carlos Tevez have mustered between them in the English top flight. But it was in the Champions League, specifically against Barcelona, that he was heard to voice his frustration at being marooned alone up front by his manager Jos Mourinho. If City are to lure Ronaldo back to Manchester from the Santiago Bernabu, they'll have to buy him out of a £100 million contract on which there's four years left to run. Considering the persistence of murmurs linking Udinese's Chilean winger Alexis Sanchez (£30 million) and Tottenham's Welsh winger Gareth Bale (£40 million) with the world's richest club, it's probably fair to say that for little Shaun Wright-Phillips, the City jig is almost certainly up.The traffic out of Eastlands may not be one way, according to Metro, with Juventus rumoured to be considering moves for Carlos Tevez and Edin Dzeko, not to mention scampering Arsenal touchline-hugger Theo Walcott, who might prefer to go and win nothing in a slightly warmer climate, for a change. In dire need of some width in their struggling side, the Turin outfit are also reported to be interested in Dutch international Royston Drenthe, the Real Madrid winger who's just spent an eventful season labouring on loan at recently relegated Spanish side Hercules.Elsewhere in Spain, Kaka insists he's not leaving Real Madrid for England or Italy, while Valencia are keeping tabs on Barcelona striker Bojan Krkic, who it seems harsh to continually criticise for not quite cutting the mustard at Nou Camp, considering he's still just a whelp of 20 years of age.In a welcome story that has nothing to do with Manchester City, the Mirror reports that Liverpool "have made a formal approach" for Ligue 1 leaders Lille's 20-year-old winger, Eden Hazard. With Arsenal, Chelsea and Real Madrid also reported to be interested in the £20 million-rated Belgian attacking midfielder whose mum and dad both played football at a decent level, Kenny Dalglish will have his work cut out to lure him to a club currently unable to compete with their rivals in terms of offering silly money or Champions League football.Despite being the hot tip to replace Edwin van der Sar at Old Trafford when the imposing Dutch goalkeeper retires this summer, imposing Dutch goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg has told reporters that he has thus far received no offer from Manchester United, but has had a "fantastic" one from his current club Ajax."There has been nothing else, zero, maybe because I've been injured," he told reporters, before issuing United with a decidedly subtle come-and-get-me-plea: "Anybody who does not want to play for Manchester United would be insane," he declared.Bolton centre-half Gary Cahill is confident of forsaking the Reebok Stadium to take up residency in the heart of Arsenal's porous defence next season, subject to Arsne Wenger dusting off his cheque book and handing over £15 million. Manchester United have also been sniffing around the sought-after Trotter.Meanwhile at the San Siro, Milan are prepared to offer Tottenham former Arsenal favourite Mathieu Flamini and a big bag of money in exchange for White Hart Lane dressing room japester and midfield enforcer Sandro. We're telling you now, that one won't happen. Not content with having one disappointingly inconsistent African striker on their books in Ghana's finest Asamoah Gyan, Sunderland will add another by rescuing Senegalese forward Demba Ba from West Ham, in a bid to fill the Danny Welbeck-shaped hole set to appear in their squad once the Manchester United loanee returns to Old Trafford.

Busquets cleared for final

Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets has been cleared to play in the Champions League final after UEFA dismissed Real Madrid's claim he racially insulted fullback Marcelo in their heated semi-final first leg.
UEFA said in a statement on Monday the chairman of its Control and Disciplinary Body had ruled there was a "lack of strong and convincing evidence" that Busquets had twice called Brazilian Marcelo a monkey, or "mono" in Spanish during last month's semi-final first leg.In a separate ruling, UEFA dismissed Real's appeal against an earlier decision to reject the club's complaint about what it said was unsporting behaviour by a number of Barcelona players designed to influence the referee."The UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body decision to dismiss Real Madrid CF's protest relating to the UEFA Champions League semi-final first leg is upheld by UEFA's Appeals Body," UEFA said.Barcelona, who sealed a third straight La Liga title last week, face English Premier League champions Manchester United in the final of Europe's elite club competition at London's Wembley stadium on May 28.Spain international Busquets could have faced a five-match ban if European soccer's governing body had found him guilty of abusing Marcelo at Real's Bernabeu stadium.Barcelona argued in their player's defence that Busquets had not used the word "mono."What television images of him addressing the Brazilian showed was him saying Marcelo had a lot of nerve, or "mucho morro," the club said.

Club vice chairman says: Maradona to take over as Al Wasl coach next season

Argentina legend Diego Maradona is to take over as coach next season at Dubai's Al Wasl, the club vice-chairman Marwane Ben Bayatt announced on Monday.
"We have reached an agreement with Maradona and we will release details later," Ben Bayatt said. Maradona is to lead the team for the next two seasons, the Al Wasl Sports Club said in a statement on Monday.Details of Maradona’s contract will be revealed during a press conference that is expected to be held in the presence of the new coach during the first of week of June. The 50-year-old Maradona was manager of the Argentina national side at last year's World Cup in South Africa, but lost his job after they lost 4-0 to Germany in the quarter-finals.He paid a visit to the Al Wasl training facility and headquarters on Saturday when club officials said an announcement could be made shortly.Al Wasl are currently fourth in the domestic league and have been looking for a coach since firing Sergio Farias in March.Speculators were earlier saying if the deal was confirmed, don't be too surprised to see other stars like Pedro, Messi, Puyol, Iniesta, Pique or Xavi also coming down to visit the club in Dubai in the near future. Not because the high-profile Maradona would be the manager, but because of a certain Albert Benaiges who has taken over as the director of youth development at the club.FC Barcelona, due to play for the UEFA Champions League title against Manchester United on May 28, had seven of their members in the 2010 Fifa World Cup in South Africa. And Benaiges is the one who can rightly take the credit for making these players into stars for the modern generation in his capacity as technical director of FCB Escola - the Catalan club's in-house academy.
I am just the one who was entrusted with the task of guiding these players and I did my job. I was like the potter and they were the clay in my hands," Benaiges told Gulf News on the sidelines of the 1st Dubai International Football Academies Forum held earlier this week.

Lille leave it late to seal French Cup triumph

Ludovic Obraniak netted with a bizarre late free kick as double hopefuls Lille lifted the French Cup and their first major trophy since 1955 with a 1-0 win over last season's winners Paris St Germain on Saturday.PSG goalkeeper Gregory Coupet, retiring at the end of the season, misjudged Obraniak's wide free kick which drifted over his head and went in off the post after 89 minutes.Coupet redeemed himself slightly by saving Mathieu Debuchy's penalty moments later but the damage had been done as Ligue 1 leaders Lille took their sixth French Cup.Lille could wrap up their first league title since 1954 and their first double since 1946 with two matches to spare if second-placed Olympique Marseille lose at FC Lorient on Sunday and "the Mastiffs" beat Sochaux in Wednesday's game in hand.Dominant in the 1940s and 50s, Lille had slipped down the pecking order in France but the northerners are now very much at the top of the game and eagerly grabbed the trophy from French president Nicolas Sarkozy at the ticker-tape presentation. In a match of few chances in front of a packed Stade de France, Rudi Garcia's Lille just about edged the dull encounter before it burst into life late on.Gervinho wasted an opening from an early counter-attack while Lille defender Adil Rami headed over and Ligue 1 top scorer Moussa Sow thrashed the ball just too high from distance.PSG's only real sniff of a goal before the break was when Lille keeper Mikael Landreau was forced to save Nene's free kick with his legs and the second period brought even less goalmouth action for Antoine Kambouare's team.PSG, in six of the last nine finals including Saturday's clash, had veterans Claude Makelele and Ludovic Giuly in their team but not even their experience could help break down a Lille side who have prospered this term thanks to dogged hard work.Winger Eden Hazard has often been the player to add the flair during Lille's surprise return to the upper echelons of French soccer but even he failed to shine on the day Inter Milan boss Leonardo denied reports his side have bid for the Belgian. The game looked highly likely to end goalless after 90 minutes until the unexpected late drama.

Champions Dortmund beat Frankfurt

Champions Borussia Dortmund finished their sparkling title-winning season with a 3-1 home win over Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday, sending their opponents into the second division.Frankfurt battled hard, with keeper Ralf Faehrmann saving two penalties, and even took the lead through Sebastian Rode before Lucas Barrios scored twice.Marco Russ added an own goal to give the hosts a winning finale and kick off a weekend party in front of 80,720 home fans.Bayer Leverkusen held on to second place with a 1-0 victory at Freiburg to book their automatic Champions League qualification, leaving Bayern Munich in third and with a spot in the Champions League qualifying rounds despite their 2-1 win over VfB Stuttgart.Hanover 96 and Mainz 05 will compete in the Europa League after finishing fourth and fifth respectively. At the other end of the table, Felix Magath's VfL Wolfsburg, the 2009 champions, stayed up after going through a rollercoaster of emotions in coming from a goal down to beat hosts Hoffenheim 3-1 thanks to two goals from Mario Mandzukic.Borussia Moenchengladbach completed their spectacular comeback, drawing at Hamburg SV 1-1 to capture the relegation playoff spot with three wins and a draw in their last four games.
St Pauli will join Frankfurt in the second division.

Dutch football 'needs to keep its top players in the country'

Dutch football faces the mammoth challenge of keeping homegrown talent within its clubs if it seeks to scale the heights of glory days of "total football" in the 1970s and 80s, according to a top official from the Dutch Football Association.
"We need our players to stay within our clubs in the Netherlands and our biggest challenge at the moment is to keep the agents away from taking our top players to play in other leagues in Europe," Corne Groenendijk, the technical expert from the Netherlands Royal Football Association told delegates on the final day of the 1st Dubai International Football Academies Forum Sunday.
Known either for their synonymous concept of "total football" or for delivering some of the flamboyant names in the sport like Johan Cryuff, Van Basten and Gullit, the coach believed that the bane of Dutch modern-day football has more to do with the "structural environment" than with talent today.
"Our World Cup team today is even better than the teams of 1974 or 1978," Groenendijk said in response to a question."We have been suffering due to some changes in the structural environment and not due to the paucity of players. We have players like Sneijder, Robben and Van Persie to match those names of the 1970s and 80s," he said.
"What we have instructed our coaches, is to keep away from this 10 per cent of talented players and allow them to develop. On the other hand, the staff has also be told to make the other 90 per cent work hard and try and match this 10 per cent," Groenendijk said.
"In this way, we are not missing too many things to have a successful run, as seen by our entry into the 2010 Fifa World Cup final. But what we see as a definite challenge is how to keep these players back at our clubs in the Netherlands," he asserted.
"The debate following our loss to Spain last year has been ‘Should we be known for good football and go home after the first round? Or should our football be more of a fight and less of play?'. My opinion is good football, and the current team has the stars to show this brand," Groenendijk reiterated.
"We have no Dutch secret on our success. We have a vision at the club level and we have stuck to this vision while working with a single-minded focus. The results will be seen in due course," he added.

Manchester celebrates contrasting double success

Manchester celebrated winning the two biggest trophies in English football on Saturday as United claimed a record 19th league title and City lifted the FA Cup.It was business as usual for United who drew 1-1 at Blackburn Rovers to earn the point they needed to win the Premier League but City's 1-0 victory over Stoke City secured their first trophy for 35 years.Fans of big-spending City will hope the triumph begins an era of domination similar to the one arch-rivals United have enjoyed since their FA Cup success in 1990 sparked a run of 25 major trophies in 21 years."We won the FA Cup. It is an important trophy," City manager Roberto Mancini said. "We need to improve more to do another step but it was important to start to win because when you start to win, afterwards everything will be easier."United manager Alex Ferguson was delighted his side had become the most successful team in English football, finally knocking arch-rivals Liverpool "off their perch" as he promised to do at the start of his managerial reign at Old Trafford."It's not so much passing Liverpool," Ferguson said. "That thing about knocking Liverpool off their perch, I don't think I actually said it, but it's more important that United are the best team in the country in terms of winning titles."Same with the FA Cup. We have won it more times than everyone (11) and now we have won the Premier League more times than anyone."United fell behind against Blackburn when Brett Emerton scored for the hosts midway through the first half at Ewood Park but, as so often this season, Ferguson's team dug deep to get what they needed.Mexican striker Javier Hernandez was fouled by Blackburn goalkeeper Paul Robinson as he chased a long ball and, after a consultation with his linesman, the referee awarded a penalty.Wayne Rooney stepped up to convert the spot-kick but he was not feeling as calm as he looked."It was terrifying," said the England striker whohad stunned United by asking for a transfer in October but changed his mind and returned to form in time to play a big part in their title win.City dominated the match against Stoke at Wembleybut failed to find the net until the 74th minute when midfielder Yaya Toure blasted the ball home from 12 metres."We bought him for this," Mancini said. "He is a fantastic player. He scored in the semi-final (against Manchester United) and the final. All season he has played very well."United's thoughts will now turn to the Champions League final against Barcelona on May 28 at Wembley while City will be pondering playing in next season's competition."We have got to the Champions League, that was our first target, and we won the FA Cup," Mancini said. "It is very important for this club."
